I always wondered about 'cut' material from the books? Why and who makes those decisions and how about some that you had cut (if you have) from both books?

“Cut” materials in almost any of my books are dictated by me. I’m a “fly into the mist” kind of writer and sometimes when I’m not entirely certain where I’m going, I do a lot of circling. It may be good material, snappy dialogue, whatever, but if it doesn’t keep the story line moving forward, it gets whacked.

And in the case of THE MARQUESS and THE ENGLISH HEIRESS, I was writing in an older Regency style that required a lot of circumlocutions, which required a lot of repetition, and the verbiage simply stacked up. Adding to that haystack was the fact that I was writing on an old DOS computer with limited capacity, so I wrote and edited everything by hand. (The ghosts in my attic kept crashing my machine and I was terrified of losing text.) And I didn’t have the time or equipment to go back and hack unnecessary scenery.

Since THE MARQUESS made it into print and has been reissued frequently, I’ve edited it several times over the years and no longer have any excerpts at hand. Michael’s book, however, is another story. Scattered over corrupted Word 6 disks and in various versions and hard copy in my basement,  I have umpteen versions and edited scenes scattered all over, and trying to remember which version contained what would be a major headache.

Even after I pieced the story back together and edited out huge chunks, my fantastic editor at Book View Café, Sherwood Smith, cut nearly 20,000 words of repetitive text. I could probably fill another book with cut material.  I’ll copy the first small excised text I found below. As you can tell, there’s nothing wrong with it. It just doesn’t say anything that hasn’t already been said.

That Blanche’s breath caught when his muscles rippled beneath his coat didn’t mean anything. She admired fine horse flesh too. Sunny days and the laughter of children made her heart sing with joy. What she felt for Michael was little more.
But it wasn’t the return of a horse or a sunny day she awaited now.
She wanted Michael, the one man in her world she couldn’t have.

I also cut a lot of material about secondary characters from Michael’s book that would lead to the other books in the series. I knew the third book, IRISH DUCHESS, wasn’t even in my computer because the entire back-up disk had corrupted. I had only one copy of the manuscript I’d sold umpteen years ago. I’d spent so many years putting Michael back together again, I didn’t think I’d ever have the time or patience to bother re-creating the DUCHESS.  I still may not. But readers have been so wonderfully supportive of THE ENGLISH HEIRESS that I’ve bitten the bullet, made a copy of those old pages, and sent the DUCHESS in for scanning. I may have mountains more of text littering the cutting room floor in the months to come!

How to Do Innocent Sexiness

So there I was with a historical romance trilogy under my belt, and I realized that there would be an unavoidable lapse before the next one. “I have an idea,” my editor said. “Why don’t you write an e-story to bridge the gap.”
How did I answer? The way I answer any question put to me by my editor. “Sure. I can do that.”
Hmmm. What exactly should the story be? I couldn’t just slip one into the ongoing timeline. After all, my series is about a group of gentlemen spies who are in the midst of foiling a plot to overthrow the British throne in 1815. Before I knew what I was doing, I had established a timeline. Ian Ferguson, one of my spies, also called Drake’s Rakes, ended the last book of the first trilogy(Always a Temptress) shot and falling into the English Channel. I couldn’t simply say, “And now for something completely different.” By the time I got back to him, he’d be a mackerel snack.
Well, I thought, how bout I introduce the next trilogy?
“Next trilogy?” my editor asked. “You just said you’re doing the Rakes. That’s nine books.”
“Ah, yes, but if I divide it up by heroines into three, the whole thing would be much more manageable.”(at least for me.)
Just as with every conversation I have with my editor, this one ended with me saying, “Trust me.”
So I would like to introduce my new Drake’s Rakes trilogy, Last Chance Academy, where the next three heroines—Sarah Clarke, Fiona Ferguson and Pippin Knight—survived school. They think they were sent there because they were incorrigible. And while they are, there is another very good reason. They just don’t know it until they find out in my estory, It Begins With a Kiss.
Excellent. We have an idea. We have a story that introduces not only the school and how it affects our heroines, it introduces those heroines, and lets us know which heroes they will eventually match wits with. Which brings us to an unexpected problem.
“We’d like it to be…you know…hot,” one of the publishing people said.
Okay. So in addition to introducing the characters, I  had to actually introduce one of the couples. I settled on Fiona Ferguson and Alex Knight, who is called to the school to stop Fiona from running away. And yes, of course there is chemistry. How can there not be?
            However…
When Kiss begins, Fiona is only sixteen. Alex is only twenty-three or so, but still, it just seemed a bit…well, felonious. So I’ll admit it right now. There is no full-frontal nudity. There is, however, quite enough action to make their relationship inevitable.
I really hope you enjoy It Begins With a Kiss. I had such fun writing it(once I figured out that whole PG rating thing). And I do get to introduce three new heroines, whom I know I’m going to love just as much as the Three Graces who made up the first trilogy. Tell me if you agree.
Stop by my website www.eileendreyer.com or my Drake’s Rakes page on Facebook for giveaways and notifications. Oh, and romance trading cards. I have a brand new one for It Begins With a Kiss, complete with one of the most beautiful covers I’ve ever seen, much less had. And let me know if I got that heat level right. I hope so. I’ve loved my Rakes for a long time. And I’m really falling in love with the girls of Last Chance Academy.

I would like to start off by extending a HUGE thank you
to author Jennifer Jakes for hosting me on her blog today!  I have never done a blog, or even been a guest on anyone's blog, so this is truly an honor for me to be here.  I have been away from writing for a long time -- it's been ten years since my tenth, and last, book was published, and Jennifer has been instrumental in helping me launch my
new e-career!  Hello, everyone

THE WILD ONE BLURB:

England, 1776: Lord Gareth de Montforte is known as an irresponsible rake with a heart of gold. When he takes a bullet for boldly thwarting a stagecoach robbery, he is stunned to discover that the beautiful young woman he has heroically rescued, Juliet Paige, is his deceased brother’s American fiancée, accompanied by her infant daughter. Despite his brother the duke's refusal to acknowledge Juliet, Gareth is determined to do right by the courageous woman who crossed an ocean to give her baby her rightful name. But Juliet is wary of marrying this black sheep aristocrat, even while she is hopelessly charmed by the dashing devil. Never has she met anyone who embraces life so thoroughly, who makes her laugh, who loves her so well. And, even when it seems the odds are against them, Juliet has absolute faith that Gareth will go beyond the call of duty, risking his life itself to give her and her daughter a home — and a love that will last
a lifetime.

THE WILD ONE EXCERPT:
"Just what on earth are you doing, Lord Gareth?"

The way she said it made his cheeks warm with embarrassment. So he
was a pillock. Who cared? Instead, he gave her his most devastating
grin and said with cheerful earnestness, "Why, I have come to rescue
you, of course."

"Rescue me?"

"Surely you didn't think I'd allow Lucien to banish you into
obscurity, now, did you?"

"Well, I -  The duke didn't ban-"  She gave a disbelieving little
laugh and leaned out the window, grasping the blanket tightly at her
breasts. Her hair, caught in a long, dark braid, swung tantalizingly
out over her bosom. "Really, Lord Gareth. This is ... highly
irregular!"

"Yes, but the hour is late, and as it took me all day to find you, I
was feeling rather impatient. I do hope you'll forgive me for
resorting to such desperate measures. May I come in and talk?"

"Of course not! I - I cannot have a man in my bedroom!"

"Why not, my sweet?" He pushed aside a small, leafy twig in order to
see her better and grinned cajolingly up at her. "I had you in mine."

She shook her head, torn between what she wanted to do - and what she
ought to do. "Really, Lord Gareth ... your brother will never approve
of this. You should go home. After all, you're the son of a duke and
I'm just a - "

" - beautiful young woman with nowhere else to go. A beautiful young
woman who should be a part of my family. Now, do collect Charlotte
and your things, Miss Paige - I fear we must make haste, if we are to
marry before Lucien catches up to us."

"Marry?!" she cried, forgetting to whisper.

He gazed at her in blank, perfect innocence. "Well, yes, of course,"
he said, clinging to the branch as it dropped another few inches.
"Surely you don't think I'd be hanging out of a tree for anything
less, do you?"
