Friday Fun : Meet Ashlyn Mathews!! + Give*Away!

Jennifer,
Thank you so much for having me on your blog. I’d love to offer your readers a chance to win Shadow Watcher delivered to their Kindle or Nook. Also, I’m running a contest on my website, www.ashlynmathews.com, to win all three of my books. Good luck!

Was your road to publication a delightful stroll in the park or a tiring jog over hot coals? My road to publication was easy. Sometimes so easy, I’m embarrassed to admit it. However, it’s the “after” that was the most challenging. For Shadow Watcher, I was asked by my editor to do a “wholesale rewrite.” What that meant was several subplots were cut, secondary characters were killed off, and my premise of the hero and heroine being soul mates was abandoned. I also went from a 75k manuscript to 55k. That happened in 3 weeks. I agonized and cried over the changes. However, in the end, I hunkered down and rewrote/revise, and I think my story is better for it.

What is the most difficult for you to write: Characters, conflict, emotions? Conveying emotion on paper is the hardest for me. Conflict I get. My characters I know from birth before I write their stories. But to convey emotion in a non-clichĂ© manner is hard. I remember with Shadow Watcher, my editor was like, this is a romance. Readers expect your characters to show or tell us what they feel. I’m very action oriented so I try to convey my characters’ emotions through action. That may or may not be the right way to do it, but that’s what has worked for me. A character can only cry or smile in so many different ways, lol.

Do you have critique partners? I don’t have critique partners but I use two or three consistent beta readers who give me a general idea of what they like/dislike, any plot holes, and clarification points that need addressing. They don’t focus on grammar but the overall picture. I find this process more useful than a critique group or partner. When I have used critique partners or a group, I find that it takes me longer to finish a book because I’m constantly changing things based on that critique. Then I doubt myself and it becomes a spiraling free fall of constant rewrites and edits which I don’t have the patience for. I get really cranky, lol. I’m sure for some writers, a critique group is invaluable. I say do whatever works!

What music are you listening to lately? I like to listen to angsty, haunting music that represents my books. For Shadow Watcher, I suggest Skillet’s Awake and Alive. For If Only, it’s 3 Doors Down’s Here By Me. Right now, I’m listening to Richard Marx’s Hazard based off of a fellow author’s top 10 favorite tunes. Mostly, I like rock. But I enjoy all types of music. For my latest WIP, Echo UnMarked, it’s the Phantom of the Opera.

Tell us a little about your WIP. My next WIP is Echo UnMarked, a Shadow Watcher novel. I have some ideas of a plot but nothing concrete yet. Readers can find a blurb and excerpt on my website www.ashlynmathews.com.

Favorite romance movie? One of my favorite romance movies is House of Flying Daggers. The movie begs the question of “Is there such a thing as love at first sight?” It’s a tragic love story with a love triangle set in the forefront of an impending war. I’ve watched it several times and the ending still has me grabbing for my box of Kleenex.

Blurb for Shadow Watcher: Demon Hunter Sophie Sinclair and ex-Homicide Detective Ryan Campbell are pitted against one another, tested by mysterious forces in a dangerous game of secret identities, contracts for murder, and past betrayals.
Sophie Sinclair was presumed dead. When an enemy’s transmitter reveals her existence, she must return home to bargain for her ex-lover’s life and face the unanswered questions from her past.
Ryan Campbell is a reluctant fighter. Bitter since his father’s murder, he wants nothing to do with the paranormal world. When his act of betrayal is discovered, he must do the unthinkable to save his life.
Duty above love, duty above family, and to protect the weak from the strong. Sophie has always lived by her family’s motto. Will she choose to protect the ex-lover from her past or the reluctant fighter who could be her future? She can save only one man.
If Only (Available 12/3/12):  One night. One accident. A friendship torn. A chance at love lost.
Excerpt:
A funeral was the worst place for a reunion. Beneath her umbrella, Asa kept her head lowered. Otherwise, her eyes would be drawn to the man standing in front of the casket, his shoulders hunched beneath his suit, his gaze down cast as cold rain fell from the skies.
Rhys Miles. The man who had hurt her with an insensitive comment during one of the most memorable nights of her life, and a man she had hurt in return with her own painful words. The minister’s final prayer and the whispers of “Amen” from the handful of mourners pulled Asa out of her thoughts. Giving the casket one last glance, she hurried away, but wasn’t quick enough.
 “You weren’t invited, Asa.”
Rhys’s tone was harsh and filled with animosity. Asa dug her nails into her palm and gripped the umbrella’s handle tight. Yet, beneath his dislike of her was a grief she could relate with, and for his sadness, she stopped and faced the man who used to be one of her good friends.
“I loved your grandmother, and she cared about me. I have every right to be here.”
Unlike the other mourners, who came prepared with an umbrella in hand, Rhys appeared to enjoy the rain as he tilted his face to the sky. The ink of his hair appeared darker than her own strands of black, if that were possible, while his suit molded to his body like a woman offering him her comfort.
He was a tall guy. If things were different between them, she could share in his grief and settle her head on his chest, over the spot above his heart. She’d run her fingers across the straight brows over his intense hazel eyes then down the chiseled plane of his face before she would press her lips to his cheek.
But their situation remained the same for the past year. He avoided her. She tried to forget him. It hadn’t been easy. Asa waited for him to say something, anything. The rain continued to fall while his silence echoed in her ears.
Taking a deep breath, he redirected his attention back on her. “You might’ve been Jo’s neighbor, and yeah, she might’ve loved you like you were her own flesh and blood, but she damn well knows how I feel about you.”
How I feel about you. His last words whispered hot on her forehead. The umbrella, with its edges tipped upward, should’ve distanced them. Instead it concealed their exchange from curious stares as the others filtered to their cars leaving her alone with him.
Shoving her free hand inside her coat pocket, Asa mentally counted to ten. The simple task proved difficult. She hadn’t been this close to Rhys since they had slept together at a party almost a year ago.
He had loosened the tie around his neck, exposing tan skin she remembered flicking her tongue over, the salty taste of him from their lovemaking still embedded deep in her memory. Through the smell of wet rain, she caught a whiff of his deodorant. Old Spice. Sexy, familiar, and very much Rhys.

Friday Fun with Author Trish F. Leger + Give*away!

1. What is the most difficult part for me to write in a book?

I would have to say that it would be the characters, not necessarily the individual, but more like their interaction with others, or the dialogue. I've had to work on my dialogue skills lately, I still am, matter of fact.

2. What music have I listened to lately?

Mostly it's dance or R&B, hip hop. But I enjoy any music, classical and country also. My latest favorites are Bruno Mars and Neon Trees.

3. What classic novel would you like turned into a movie?

This is scary to me because I've always loved WHITNEY MY LOVE by JUDITH MCNAUGHT, but I have a horrible feeling that they could never do it justice. The intricacy of Whitney & Clayton could never be conveyed correctly, in my opinion.

4. If I could pick a HERO for my book, which actor would it be?

For Traven (HER DRUID TEMPTATION) it would have to be Ian Somerhalder. He's a take charge, ALPHA kind of guy. For Drake (HER DRUID DESIRE) maybe Joe Manganiello from TRUE BLOOD. Drake's a big, muscular guy, so is Joe.

5. Favorite writing conference...

Well, I've only been to it once, but RWA was awesome!

6. Tropical or European vacation?

European--all that history makes me excited! ;)  I could seriously get lost over there!

********** LEAVE A COMMENT FOR YOU CHANCE TO WIN 1 eBook of either of Trish's books.

Excerpt from HER DRUID TEMPTATION--

 “God, I love this city.”
Her sultry voice slammed into his ears, slapping him out of whatever trance he’d been in.
“I do too. Could be why I’ve lived here for the past ten years.”
Her gorgeous eyes landed on his face. Traven felt the oddest urge to cup her cheek and hold her close.
What in the hell was happening to him?
“Must be the constant partying that keeps you coming back for more, right?” She asked, as they stopped at a corner to let some other traffic go by.
Traven trailed his hand from her waist to her arm, catching her hand in his, he asked, “Why do you always assume the worst of me?”
She looked stunned that he’d even asked that question. Traven felt an emotion from her that he’d never expected her to show in his presence: embarrassment.
Her mouth opened but nothing came out. She tried again. “It’s just that I’ve never known you to be anything other than a constant, 24/7 party.”
Traven didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed her hand with renewed fervor and continued on to the restaurant where they were to have supper. It was his entire fault, of course. He’d always been the consummate player, the man who’d rather party and play around, then have a serious conversation. She’d never had the chance to see him in somber mode. For the past fifty years, in her eyes, he’d shown her a shell of the man he really was. He couldn’t blame her for thinking the worst of him.
He let his thumb rub the softest skin he’d ever felt, and glanced down into her still stunned eyes.
“For tonight, don’t picture me as the man you’ve known for the past five decades. Imagine me as someone better.”

Friday Fun! Meet SABRINA GARIE :)

Thanks Jennifer for hosting me. I’m excited to be here. I will be giving away one free e-copy of my debut release Fires of Justice, a paranormal erotic romance full of witches and shifter.  Here’s

Where is your favorite place to write?
I love to write on the couch with my feet on the coffee table and the laptop on my lap.  I like the casual feel, it releases my creative spirit.  Since I am chained to a desk at work, I prefer a different arrangement at home.

What is the most difficult for you to write: Characters, conflict, emotions? The hardest thing for me to write is …description (houses, landscapes).  I’m so often lost in my own mind that I’m oblivious to my surroundings.  Even when I read, I tend to bleep over lengthy descriptions in my need for plot and character. When I write, I often have to go back and add the descriptions in, forcing myself to look at the fine grained details of the world.

If you could time travel would you go forward or backward?  Forward, no contest. The science fiction and technology geek in me wants to see all the new shiny things right around the corner and think about how that technology affects our lives and the world around us.  Looking forward reflects my attitude toward life—onward and upward.  I try to avoid looking back. For me that road seems the quickest route to insanity.

What is your favorite time of year?  Fall.  Not only can you wear boots without winter coats, but it’s spiced with flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon and apples and ushers in my favorite holiday of the year. Halloween turns me into a creative whirling dervish—haunted houses, spider cupcakes, spooky costumes and wicked stories.

Do you believe in love at first sight?  You know, I do.  I believe that instinct is your heart and soul seeing what your mind has not yet processed.  Love at first site is a kind of recognition of things on a deeper plane.

Do you believe in love at first sight?  Let me know what you think and your e-mail and one commenter will win a free copy of Fires of Justice (only ecopies available).

His pain speaks to her own deep-rooted isolation and the intensity of his hunger slakes her passion like no other.
Cullen, scarred by a past that left him an indentured soldier to the guardians, resents yet another hump-on-command assignment…until he encounters the compassionate, fearless, incendiary redhead who detonates his body and reawakens the emotions sacrifice and loss had suppressed. But Cullen harbors a terrible secret—one that reaches back into Calista’s troubled childhood and threatens the foundation of their growing bond.

Friday Fun!! Come into the world of DARK FAE ~

Dark Fae- A Wild Ride into Celtic Lore
Thank you SO much for helping me spread the word about my new release, “Dark Fae”! This is the final book in my Celtic Legacy series, that follows Quinn as she fights to save her little sister Ashling. Quinn battles her fears, monsters dredged up from Irish Mythology and the pull of her heart strings between two stunning men; one she’s prophesied to be with, the other her heart can’t let go of.

Overview of “Dark Fae”
With Chaos free in the world, Quinn finally faces the truth. She must kill the one she has spent her life trying to protect in order to save the world. But with leader of the Tuatha against her, her own brother seeking her blood and the world in upheaval, Quinn may not see the day that prophecy has claimed will come to pass.

At least, not without a sword that no longer exists.

Praise for the Celtic Legacy Series . . .
"This is a story of integrity, determination, sisterly bonds, and courage laced with fear. The characters are multi-layered, and they come to life in Mayer's skillful hands."

“Start with "Dark Waters", hang onto your hat through "Dark Isle" then hold your breath waiting eagerly for the final volume. I'm telling you, this series will take you to another, better place. I'm going to read all of Ms. Mayer's stories. I'm a fan!”

“When I found out this was a trilogy, I had to go back and get book one. Very good story and I literally could not put either book down.”

“Of the myriad fantasies I have read this summer, this one stands out among the best. Shannon Mayer brings some very old magic into the modern world, and the result is a wild ride through West Coast forest, the shining Pacific and beyond. She creates characters we can care about in a setting we can see, feel and smell.”

Friday Fun : Meet Brittany Booker!!

Please help me welcome, BRITTANY BOOKER, to the blog! She's got a real treat for all you Paranormal fans!! Her release date is a few months away but we've got a teasing blurb for you and the link to her publisher/ Buy Link!
You can follow  Brittany's Blog to keep updates on when you can order this great book!

Thanks for being here today, Brittany!  Love the cover ........(tee-hee) I can say that with pride because Kim Killion of Hot Damn Designs --where I work -- did the beautiful manchest;)
****
Was your road to publication a delightful stroll in the park or a tiring jog over hot coals?
Oh, it was anything but easy. I was rejected so many times that I could receipt a rejection letter by heart. Black Opal gave me a chance no one else would.
What is the most difficult for you to write: Characters, conflict, emotions?
Hmm. I would say emotions. The characters use a lot of dialect and that’s always easy for me. Emotions can be tricky; sometimes it’s so easy to repeat words when a character has a certain emotion. Publishers or readers do not like that, so it’s best to try to use a wide variety of words.
 Do you have critique partners?
Jordy Albert, another jr. literary agent from the Corvisiero Literary Agency. I ask her to read over my things. She never has a problem with helping me and gives me her honest opinion. I love and appreciate her so much.
If you were going to cast the hero of your book, what actor would get the part?
I already know this one! Steven Strait. He would make an awesome Darrton.
If you could time travel would you go forward or backward?
Definitely backwards. I would stop in the 80s because I love their clothing. But, I think I would like to go to the Victorian age, it sounds so beautiful.
What was the best advice you were given leading you to getting published?
I’m sure this is worn out, but don’t give up. Oh, and get over your work. Use the critiques people give you and go forward to your dreams.

Damned Blurb

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Lawrence thinks her junior year in school is complete when her ex fling Trevor asks her out again.  But, oh, how she was wrong. Lizzie comes home to find Death of the four horsemen in her back yard. Darrton is arrogant, rude, self-centered, dangerously gorgeous and out to kill. Lizzie takes care of Darrton while he is healing from being damned to earth, but it has consequences she can only imagine. With Warren and Caden of the horsemen after her, Lizzie ends up making decisions that will save Darrton but curse her. Will their growing love for one another be enough to break the bond Lizzie will makes to save Darrton’s soul, or will she be damned just the same?

Friday Fun - Meet Author Michele Drier!

Please help me welcome the talented MICHELE DRIER! She's brought her latest release, SNAP. All you Paranormal lovers take notice! Here's a great new Vamp book ;)
You can learn more about Michele at her website
But come on back for a visit !

Thanks for being here today, Michele.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for having me as a guest today!  I’m particularly excited because the second in the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles, SNAP: New Talent, has just been published on Amazon!

Once upstairs, I didn’t shield much from Jean-Louis.
I’d certainly had my share of affairs, short-time attractions and even a couple of long-term lovers, but I’d never known a man so attuned to my wants as he was.  He was the epitome of the Pointer Sisters’ “Slow Hands” and that played in my head for the next hour or so while we made languorous love.
From SNAP: New Talent, Book Two of the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles

Hard-driving media businesswoman Maximillia Gwenoch thought she’d found her perfect job when she took on SNAP’s managing editorship.  She had her eye on fame, fortune and Jimmy Choos.
What she got was an introduction to dishy and super-sexy Jean-Louis.  A co-worker.  A vampire.  And second-in-command of the powerful Kandesky Hungarian vampire family.
In both the first and second book of the Kandesky Vampire Chronicles, SNAP: The World Unfolds, and the new release, SNAP: New Talent, Maxie is torn between her need for her career and her love for Jean-Louis.  And Jean-Louis is edging ahead. After all, he’s had about 500 years to learn what women want—and to perfect his techniques.
Different Genres, Sexy Guys
I write in two different genres: paranormal romance and traditional mystery, and each genre has a love interest.  The guys are of a type I admire (oh, hell; prefer, if I could find ‘em), urbane, intelligent, witty, slightly wounded from previous entanglements but trying to get it right.  Sort of like a friend of mine who said, right before his fourth wedding, “I believe in marriage.  I’m going to keep doing it until I get it right” (I think he stopped at five).
Outside of nothing at all, I think the sexiest thing a man can wear is a black evening suit.  Maybe too much James Bond in my formative years?
Worldly Vamps
I suspect the reason the Kandesky vampires, and particularly Jean-Louis, are so worldly, rich, European, is that I couldn’t have my “regular” protagonist fall for someone violent.  If Maxie was going to fall in love with a vampire, said vampire needed to have traits that were familiar.  I read some vampire books and, even though I really like Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, Charlaine Harris resonated with me.  After all, vampires were once human.  Why shouldn’t they behave in some human ways?  One reviewer called SNAP “Twilight for grownups.”  I like that!
And, most of all, why shouldn’t they have practiced and practiced at good sex?  Some of the Kandeskys have been married to each other for upwards of 500 years.  Try that if you think having sex in your 70s or 80s has lost its appeal!  Not to mention, they all suffer from some sort of arrested development, staying the same age as when they were turned (or as the Kandeskys say “became an acolyte”).   So Francois, in his early 20s, has the body and libido to match, even though he’s several hundred years old.  And Maxie is dying to find out if he’s hetro, gay or bi.  None of her business, she’s not interested, just pure nosiness.  He’s the Paris bureau chief for SNAP, the magazine, and has a certain swish.
Two Series
The SNAP Kandesky Vampire Chronicles are a true series.  Before I began writing the first one, I knew there were going to be four books, and now I’ve added two novellas, which will tell the back stories of the Kandesky leaders: Baron Stefan Kandesky and Penelope, and Jean-Louis and Magda.  Each book in the series stands alone, but together they tell the saga of the war with the Kandesky neighbors and rivals, the powerful Huszar vampire family.
My mysteries are a series, also, that follow newspaper editor Amy Hobbes as she uncovers murders beyond those her staff regularly writes about.  There is a stable cast of players, including Amy’s lover, Phillippe Etange, art critic for the San Francisco Times, but events are always changing in the world of daily news reporting.  Again, before I began writing, I had five books plotted out.
Both series are fun to write!  I lean on my background in print media for the canvas on which these stories—and love affairs—are painted, but don’t think that the real world of journalism is populated with such sexy creatures.  Journalists report on it, they don’t do it!
With the stories in my head, and the lovers in my heart, my biggest challenge now is carving out the time to write so readers can have a seamless passage through the Chronicles.

New Release Wednesday! + Give*Away!

Help me welcome, Sapphire Phelan!
***

With my erotic urban fantasy e-novellas, Being Familiar With a Witch and its sequel, A Familiar Tangle With Hell being released in print as The Witch and The Familiar, I admit that I enjoyed world building in my characters, Tina Epson’s and her demon Familiar, Charun Adramelch’s world. Though most of the demons, angels and places’ names are from demonic, angelic and mythological pantheons, how Tina becomes a witch is all my idea. There are in real life history and legends, good and bad witches. I decided to share a couple of things used by those against evil witches: witch bottles and witch balls.

A common counterspell against illness caused by witchcraft was to put the sick person's urine in a bottle with iron nails, brass pins, and piece of lead, cork it tightly, and either set it to heat by the hearth or bury it in the ground. Joseph Blagrave wrote in 1671 that a witch’s bottle, “will endanger the witches’ life, for … they will be grievously tormented, making their water with great difficulty, if any at all.” The theory is that the witch created a magical link with her victim and this could be reversed, using the victim's body-products. The witch had to break the link to save herself. The victim would then recover.
The recipe was still known in a Norfolk village in 1939: Take a stone bottle, make water in it, and fill it with your own toe-nails and finger-nails, iron nails, and anything which belongs to you. Hang the bottle over the fire and keep stirring it. It must be dark in the room and you can’t speak or make any noise. Then the witch is supposed to come to your door and beg you to open the door and let her in. If you keep silent and ignore her, the witch will burst. In the folklore it is said that the strain on the mind of the person when the witch begs to be let in is usually so great that the person breaks down and speaks. Then the witch is set free.
In London, England, seventeenth-century pottery jugs of the kind called ‘greybeards’ or ‘bellarmines’ were found buried in ditches or streams. They contained bent nails and felt hearts stuck with pins. In Essex and Suffolk, others had been discovered, underneath the hearths or thresholds of houses. Later, cheap glass bottles would be used in the same way. One was unearthed under the hearth of a Sussex cottage in the 1860s, as was common in the country. It contained two hundred bent pins. An example that dated from the early years of the twentieth century turned up in a shop at Padstow, Cornwall. Urine was put in a cod-liver-oil bottle which had its cork pierced with eight pins and one needle, and then bricked up in a chimney. In Cambridgeshire, a three-sided iron bottle held hen's blood and feathers mingled with the usual human urine, salt, hair, and nail-clippings; also (for protection rather than cure) small bottles of greenish or bluish glass filled with colored silk threads. These had been displayed beside doors or windows, to divert the witch's power by confusing her gaze. According to the East London Advertiser on August 1, 1903, a barber in Essex was asked to save some hair-clippings from a customer's neck. This was so someone who wanted revenge on the man could place them in a bottle and then heat it until at midnight it burst, making the man ill. Not a defensive counter spell, instead this was an active magic attack, using the intended victim's hair; sometimes, witch bottles were similarly used.
In Scotland, people used to wear witch balls around their necks to ward off witches. It was also believed in Scotland and Canada that if a witch touched one, her/his soul would be caught within the ball forever.
A witch ball is a hollow sphere of plain or stained glass hung in cottage windows in eighteenth-century England to ward off evil spirits, witch's spells, or ill fortune, though the witch's ball actually originated among cultures where witches were considered a blessing. Witches would usually "enchant" the balls to enhance their potency against evils. Later, they were often posted on top of a vase or suspended by a cord (as from the mantelpiece or rafters) for a decorative effect. Witch balls appeared in America in the nineteenth century and were often found in gardens under the name "gazing ball,” something that has come back, as I bought one last summer to place in my own garden. However, "gazing balls" contain no strands within their interior. According to folk tales, witch balls would entice evil spirits with their bright colors; the strands inside the ball would then capture the spirit and prevent it from escaping.
Witch balls sometimes measure as large as seven inches (eighteen cm) in diameter. By tradition, but not always, the witch ball is green or blue in color and made from glass. There have been others made of wood, grass, or twigs, instead of glass. Some are decorated in enameled swirls and brilliant stripes of various colors. The gazing balls found in many of today's gardens are derived from silvered witch balls that acted as convex mirrors, warding off evil by reflecting it away.
Because they look similar to the glass balls used on fishing nets, witch balls are often associated with sea superstitions and legends. The modern Christmas ornament ball is descended from the witch ball. According to an ancient tale, the ornament was originally placed on the tree to dispel a visitor’s envy at the presents left beneath the tree.
Besides the ball, mistletoe was also considered a powerful charm to be used against witches, along with lightening.

Of course, even though her Familiar and lover is a demon, Tina is a good witch. Heaven has set her destiny to stop the apocalypse (or as she finds out, more than one needs to be halted). But as Tina learns, she gets to be more than a hero, she gets the guy too!

I am doing a giveaway for the whole blog tour April 23rd through April 28th. Leave a comment here or at any of the blogs I make at. You can leave a comment (plus your email, so I can contact you) at each blog, to get more chances, but no more than one per blog, please. The giveaway is a signed copy of The Witch And The Familiar. 2010 Prism Winner

Blurb:
Mortal woman Tina discovers she is part of a prophesy that says she and Charun, her demon Familiar, must make love so she can become the witch she is fated to be. If she doesn’t do it and stop the demon army bringing Armageddon to the Mortal Realm on Halloween, she won’t stand a chance in Hell.
A year later, just when Tina and Charun thought it was all over and that their life would be normal—another prophesy pops up. If Lucifer snatches Tina and mates with her before the last chime before midnight of the new year and gets her pregnant with his son, that the real Armageddon would begin, spelling the end of life as they knew it. This time they get help from an archangel, Jacokb, but with demons, Lucifer, and a cute demon bunny with fangs out of a Monty Python nightmare, out to stop them and Heaven not lending a hand, will Tina this time lose the battle and become the mother of the Antichrist and the start of a new Hell on Earth?

Excerpt (must be 18 and older to read):

The time had come.
About time too.
Not looking back, Charun rose from the bowels of Hell to the Mortal Realm, ending up just down the street from Cup of Tea and a Book bookstore. He shifted into the form of a handsome, naked man. His staff waved before him like a proud, hissing snake, spitting even as precum beaded at the slit. He shook his head. No, it was too soon for him to assume the man form.  He frowned, thinking.
A cat!
He would become a cat. That would do—for now. Just not a horny tom cat, as the pain of his arousal washed over him. He dodged into a nearby alley and worked his organ, biting his lips when he came.
Withdrawing his hand from his flaccid penis and using the other to prop himself against the building, he spoke in demon, “Denoch er nomonaty.”
A strange feeling slammed into him and he cried out as he dropped to his knees on the pavement. Thrusting out a hand against the ground so he wouldn’t topple over, he began to metamorphose, growing smaller and smaller as he did. Black fur sprouted all over his body and head. His ears sharpened into points and shot up over his head, while his hands and feet became paws edged with sharp claws. Whiskers pinged out of his cheeks and from his buttocks snaked a long tail. He hunched over and then fell over onto his ass. Within seconds, his metamorphose completed, he was a black cat. Resisting the peculiar urge to wash his face, Charun stretched and then rose onto all four paws. He padded over to a puddle of rain water to inspect the change.
He sat down and viewed his reflection. Not bad looking as far as cats went. Lifting a paw, he splashed his image. Then back on all four paws, he trotted to the street and paused to sniff the air. He sneezed as the full force of odors hit him. A multitude of different things, from the smell of blasted sunshine to the grime of city life. The sunshine revealed to him that it would not rain for days. He had arrived a day too late. The air revealed that it had thunder stormed yesterday.
He needed heavy rain to make his first appearance to his witch. Needed it as a reason for her to feel sorry for him and take him in. From what he remembered she would not leave any animal drowning in a torrential downpour. But from all the viewing he did of her growing up he knew she wasn’t an impulsive person either. He knew that she loved animals, but felt that she couldn’t afford one right now in her life. He might end up in an animal shelter or a place like that. This kind of operation needed the right things in place. Timing, too. Timing always mattered. He had learned that long ago as an Incubus. The wrong time could always mean the lover would wake up too soon. Find that their fantasy lover was real, and that the husband, wife, lover, concubine, whoever, wasn’t what really was taking them beyond the heights of lust. One Succubus found that out the hard way when her nobleman lover woke up not to find his wife mounted on his staff but a green-skinned fiend. He knocked her out before she could call her magic up and had a priest exorcised her. Exorcism was death for a demon. Instead of sending them back to Hell, it ended their existence.
So timing was important, even now. His witch’s survival was the true equation here. If she died before he made her a witch, he knew the fate for Earth if the demons took over. There was the matter of his lust for her too. Relieving it wouldn’t be bad, either.
He cocked his head and twitched his ears. He was a demon, with strong magic. Closing his eyes, he let his magic surround him with a shimmering golden light.
Lano’ste. Na la por lestano.
His fur stood on end, the ends crackling, and he widened his eyes as the magic burned within and outside with a violent heat close to atomic. He fell onto his side, dazed, and barely noted when it shot away from him, heading toward the blue skies. It dusted the few white clouds drifting along the blue sky and they became black ones, pregnant with rain.
Still unsteady, he rolled over onto his stomach and waited until the power quieted. Charun breathed in the rain odor and gave a Cheshire cat grin. He rose to his paws and padded off, as the sound of thunder vibrated in the air.
Fuck the weather forecasters and their predictions. With magic, he’d just turned their Doppler radar upside down.

Welcome to the blog, Cora!

Thank you Jennifer for hosting me today.
You’d asked how I came up with this story about six tiger shark brothers protecting their power to shift while finding their lifemate?
Depending on the age of your audience some may or may not remember,  but here goes.
My Brothers of Element Series evolved from two places. Having a love for Jacque Cousteau as a little girl, I was fascinated and scared of the water. Probably why I can’t close my eyes underwater, I like to see what’s going on at all times. Then there is my love of nature. Mutual of Omahas Wild Kingdom.
We have three ponds in our yard (hence the Series taking place within different bodies of water around the world) the largest pond has the largest koi with a blue spot on his back and a red spot on his head, like Jacque Cousteau’s knit cap he wore. My imagination took off watching the other fish follow him around. He would dart around the pump as if protecting it. (Where the idea of protecting their power to shift in the story came from.)
Once I married years later, we went to the Atlantic on vacation.  I fell in love with the vastness of the ocean and the wheels began to turn. The tiger shark was supposed to be my villain but at the aquarium, I became fascinated with him. Back home, reading up on koi food, my husband found out that blueberries would enhance their color (Blueberry koi food), this brought on the color of my main character, Dagger is blue.  Then to my horror, one morning I came out side and my seventy-five pound German shepherd was swimming in the pond and my nine year old was trying to fish the koi out with her Mickey Mouse rod and reel. (This added the anglers and poachers to my story). I’m glad to report Jacque survived the fishing expedition. In addition, Gunther, our dog, found out he wasn’t a bear, regardless of all the hair, and they weren’t salmon swimming upstream. (The pond filter worked overtime that day) From there evolved, Dagger, A Brothers of Element Series.
The brothers are named after a part of a weapon. Their legacy is to protect their power to shift. (Blade, Dagger, Ridge, Tipp, Edge and Dirk) Each brother receives a vision of his mate and he must find her and mate with her. In book one Dagger has to convince Drew a human what and who he is. The tiger shark she’s played with off the pier for ten years. She is the answer to their power to shifts survival.
Research was fun. The story centers around the power to shift (spoiler if I tell you how they shift) and its effect on the environment. If it dies, the ocean will begin to boil. In reality, the ocean is heating by a rate of two degrees a year killing vital organisms by the thousands.
Writing a love story, I had to learn the reproductive cycle of tiger sharks—can you say Oouch!! They have barbs or claspers.
Well, I put it through my sensuality filter and I’ll just say if my heroine had government secrets…she’d tell for a trip through clasperville.
Drew Hamilton, my heroine and marine biologist, is human and after losing her parents and fiancĂ© to the ocean she’s looking for revenge or at the very least closure. For ten years, she’s made the tiger shark that visits her pier her pet by default. He wouldn’t leave so she started talking to him then tossing a beach ball out to him, which he would promptly return. When he shows up on her doorstep, seeking her help in saving the ocean, revenge may not hold the same allure as when presented with her heart’s desire—a family.
Now what do I read for personal enjoyment: I love regency. Julia Quinn and Amanda Quick. I listen to Diana Gabaldon on audio.
I’ve met some truly wonderful writers, who guided me, along this highly subjective road, to not let the popular become my story, and tell the story keeping me awake at night.
What I’m working on now? The novella (Max) to come out in late April. He’s a character in book I and also working on my Contemporary line, Midnight Moanings.
What music am I listening to? For my hero, it 2 Sides of Me, by Hinder. My heroine, Fallen, by Mya.
What did I do to celebrate being published? My husband bought us a new mattress and pillows. I had been up for two years writing this story, I needed a good night’s sleep.

Thanks you Jennifer for having me.
And until the end of the month it’s on sale for $3.99.
Thank you again, Cora. I would love to hear from your readers.

Friday Fun- Meet author J. E. Hopkins!

Please help me welcome the
talented, J E Hopkins! J E
has a treat for all you
Paranormal fans! 1 lucky
commentator will win a copy
of WE SHALL RISE:)
You can learn all about J E at
 www.jehopkinsauthor.com
but be sure to come on back and
visit with us.
Grab a cup of coffee. I'm having
hazelnut flavor today. ;)

J.E., thanks so much for being here today.

1- Was your road to publication a delightful stroll in the park or a tiring jog over hot coals? My feet are still charred from those hot coals.
2- Where is your favorite place to write? I love to write while on vacation. Being in a relaxing atmosphere helps me de-stress and unlock my imagination.
3- What is the most difficult for you to write: Characters, conflict, emotions? Emotions can be a struggle. It’s hard to convey it words what the heart feels.
4- Do you have critique partners? Not formally. I have people I trust that I discuss certain aspects of my writing with, but I don’t have a person I rely on to give me a chapter analysis.
5 - What music are you listening to lately? My musical taste is all over the place. I love all music. Recently, I have been hooked on Adele. Talk about emotional music. Every song takes you on a journey of her emotions.
6- Tell us about your real life romance. Unfortunately, not much to tell which is probably why I write romance novels. I get to imagine what’s not happening in real life.
7 - Classic Novel you would like to see turned into a movie? My favorite novel of all time is The Scarlet Letter. There have been attempts to turn it into a movie, but it hasn’t worked. I would love to see someone turn this classic work into a strong script.
8 -  If you were going to cast the hero of your book, what actor would get the part? As I was writing, We Shall Rise, I pictured a beefier version of Johnny Depp as my hero Kaden. The guy is just gorgeous. Kaden has similar facial qualities, but he is a little brawnier.
9- Do you believe in love at first sight? I definitely believe in lust at first sight. I think love at first sight is a rarity, but it does happen. Too often, people mistake love, lust and infatuation.
10 -  How likely are people you meet to end up in your next book? Everyone in my life inspires some aspect of what I write. It may not be a perfect match, but there are similarities. Certainly, just riding the subways of Manhattan you see some interesting people which provides a lot of great source material.
11 - If you could time travel would you go forward or backward? Backward definitely.  I am such a history geek. I would love to go back to almost any period of history just to experience life in those times.
12 - What was the best advice you were given leading you to getting published?  To not give up and stay true to myself.
13- If you could switch places with one of your characters would you? I would love to be my character Reysa. She kicks butt and gets to go home to a sexy vampire who looks like Johnny Depp. I would definitely love to be her.
14 - What did you do to celebrate when your first book was published? I just felt so content that I finally accomplished a dream. I didn’t do much to celebrate, but it was certainly one of the best moments of my life.
15- What is your favorite dessert/food? My mother makes a coconut cake that is simply divine. I also love banana pudding.
16- Tell us a little about your WIP. I am working on book #3 in my Misfits of the Lore paranormal romance series.
17- Favorite romance movie? The Thorn Birds.
18- Favorite actor/actress/both? My favorite actors are the late Laurence Olivier and Paul Newman. My favorite actress is probably Meryl Streep.  I also enjoy Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman.
19 - Favorite song/singer? Favorite band of all time is Queen.  I also love, love, love Otis Redding.
20- Do you believe in love at first sight or just lust at first sight? I think lust at first sight is much more common, but love at first sight can happen.
21 - What is your favorite writing conference to attend? I’ve attended a few RWA conferences, but I don’t really have a favorite.
22 - What is your favorite time of year? I’m a winter baby.
23- Tropical or European vacation? Both really. For the last few years, I’ve enjoyed European vacations so this year I am off to the Caribbean.
